England "To Hannover" Sovereign Victoria 1849 |
4.00 |
|
Brass English gaming tokens in very close imitation of the one sovereign gold coins. This is dated and was probably struck in 1849. The words TO HANOVER are a satirical reference to the Duke of Cumberland, who became ruler in the German kingdom of Hanover, to which Victoria was denied succession due to her sex. Nonetheless, I don't know that England was a true bastion of feminism. Brass, approx 23mm across, nice grade, 3 headed grifin, nice item. |

Brass, approx 32mm across, Oldetyme Distillers, Inc. of New York City initially distributed Green River Whiskey tokens in the mid-30's. The tokens were used as a form of cheap advertised in magazines for magicians, and thus are called "Magic Tokens," and others were probably used as "point of sales" items in liquor stores. |

Mozambique Sena Sugar Estates Token c1920 |

|
TC-273692, Salgado & Pascoal M91, brass, approx 36mm across, holed as issued, from Luabo Mozambique. This was a British-financed company that was established in 1920 to consolidate several sugar estates in Mozambique. The company was nationalized in 1977/8 and its facilities suffered severe damage
in the civil war of the 1980s. “Pagamento Homem Prazos” indicates
that the tokens were for payment to workers on prazos. Under the
Portuguese, the original grants for prazos in Mozambique included
almost feudal powers. |

|
Lowsley #17 Pridmore #64, Black Vulcanite, approx 35mm across, G&WL monogram / "HULTSDORF MILLS, COLOMBO CEYLON " with ship. England introduced at the Hultsdorf Mills in 1872. It represented the price paid for picking a hundred-weight of coffee at the greatly reduced rate of 25 cents a hundred-weight.
The Company called The Hultsdorf Mills Co. (Ceylon) Ltd. was founded in London to develop the Mill called Belmont Oil Mill (in Belmont Street) founded in 1835 on a tract of land on the banks of the Canal at Hultsdorf. The name of Hultsdorf itself commemorates the name of General Hulft (A Governor of Ceylon during the Dutch regime). On the death in 1840 of the founder of the Mill, the new management christened it as Hultsdorf Mills, Colombo . Crushing machinery for coconut oil was installed. A saw mill was erect and in 1855 soap making was added to the mill's activities. In 1865 when the Hultsdorf Mills Co. went into liquidation the property was acquired by G. B. Leechman who with his brother William Carey Leechman as partner, founded the firm of G. & W. Leechman, the initial letters of this firm G. & W. L. are monogramed on the Token. |

Herrera Family Holdings: The Herreras have been called "the wealthiest of all the Guatemala oligarchs." Followers of the dictator Justo Rufino Barrios (1873-85), they gained Catholic Church lands which had been confiscated, to become the nation's richest landowners, and built their agricultural empire on coffee and sugar. Don Manuel M. Herrera issued his first tokens in 1871 and adopted the bee (for its industriousness) as the family symbol. He had his attractive tokens made in Paris and in San Francisco. |

Sieg-24, Eftf., Fuglefjord, brass, approx 26mm across, large lettering, uniface. These tokens came about because of a coin shortage in the islands, which was due to not enough small change being sent from Denmark. Two merchants, J. F. Kjølbro and S. P. Petersen, had private tokens produced to alleviate these shortages. The Petersen tokens were produced in Spain. They were accepted by other merchants and circulated freely throughout the islands. They were not legal tender, and the Danmarks National Bank halted production in 1933. |

Obverse: Bust of Louis XIV right, signed L.G.L. (Lazare Gottlieb Laufer), LOVIS LEGRAND ROY DEFRANCE. (Louis the Great, King of France) Reverse: Pomegranate tree with fruit under a rayed sun, DAT. FRVCTVS. DAT. QUE. CORONAS (It gives fruits and garlands). In exergue, ORD. DES. GUERRES. PAPAREL. TRES (Ordinaire des Guerres, Paparel, Treasurer). These jetons were distributed to military accountants by Paparel, Treasurer of the Army. They were struck in Nuremburg. Normally, the jetons were not allowed in France as they tended to serve as fiat currency, but somehow Paparel managed to arrange for their distribution. The pomegranate tree was a symbol of weath, fertility, and good fortune. Its fruit has ripened in the rays of the sun (undoubtedly an aleegorical reference to Louis, note the sun on his armor on the obverse) |

Reverse: hand on communion wafers and reliquary casket legend "Deo • sVo • Ivbilanti • Mvnifica", dated 1670 in a chronogram (capital letters in legend in Roman numerals total 1670).
Struck for the 300th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sacrement at the Saints Michel et Gudule Cathedral in Brussels. According to the web site for the cathedral, in 1370 traces of blood appeared on wafers pierced by the Jews of Brabant in Brussels synagogue. The relics were venerated as the Sacrament of the Miracle. After the incident a half a dozen Jews, living in Brussels and Leuven, were executed at the stake, on a charge of theft and desecration of the Holy Sacrament. In 1968, in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, the diocesan authorities of the archdiocese of Malines-Brussels, after reviewing historical research on the subject, drew attention to the biased nature of the charges and the presentation of the legendary miracle. |

England 1837 Brass Sovereign "To Hanover" Nice UNC |
7.00 |
|
Seldom seen in uncirculated condition, brass English gaming token, approx 21mm across, in very close imitation of the One Sovereign gold coin, a resemblance much assisted by the bright golden color of thi untoned Mint State example.
In the 1840s these were struck with dates under Victoria's busts, so these are probably struck in 1837 or a little after. The words TO HANOVER are a satirical reference to the Duke of Cumberland, who became ruler in the German kingdom of Hanover, to which Victoria was denied succession due to her sex. |
