Julian CM-2, Baker 279A, Bronze, approx 30mm, a more modern restrike by the US Mint. This medal was orignally struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1861 after the defection by the New Orleans Mint employees of that year to join with the South during the beginning months of the Civil War. Apparently Mint Director James Pollack believed that taking an oath would dispel and southern sympathizers, and had Paquet engrave the dies with the obverse showing Washington's bust facing right, with the words The Constitution is Sacredly Obligatory on All". On the reverse a laurel wreath surrounds "U. S. Mint. / Oath of Allegiance Taken by the Officers and Workmen / Sept 2, 1861 / Jas. Pollock Dir." |
